PAINTINGS

There’s a famous quote about art that goes: Art is not a thing, it is a way. It captures Zinnia to perfection. You don’t simply commission art from her. You go on a journey. There are questions about life, and observations about the world. What does happiness look like? How does the air smell beside a river that quietly flows alongside a moss-strewn forest? How does the sun feel as it skips through the branches of an old Douglas fir? It is an easy conversation, because she is immensely kind and wise. Yes, the final product is paint and canvas — or in some cases, paper and layers of texture. But somehow there is also depth and feeling contained within. When you stop and look at it in the weeks and months ahead, her work elicits an emotional response. How exactly does she do this? I honestly couldn’t tell you. And even if I knew, I wouldn’t want to ruin the journey. There is mystery and magic at play.

When I saw my painting for the first time and saw how Zinnia incorporated my most favourite earrings given to me by two of my best friends and the heart in the middle of the dress, something my sister (who’s also my best friend in life) gifted to me, it took my breath away. Everytime I look at it, I am reminded of some of my favourite people. I felt so connected to the process, like Zinnia knew what I was thinking and wanting. I would 100% recommend commissioning artwork from such a talented, cool, funky, energetic, calm and loving human. Trust the process, she is a true poet and artist. It’s a real treat to oneself.

JOURNALS & BOXES

I've commissioned Zinnia to craft several boxes and journals over the years to gift to people in my life. Offering someone a piece of functional art that was designed especially for them is one of the most meaningful gifts I've ever given.

I trusted Zinnia to take the stories and symbols I offered her and to turn them into something magical. She has a way of knowing what needs to be expressed, drawing on colour, texture, symbolism and metaphor to curate something meaningful. 

These boxes and journals are not objects ~ they are memory holders. They hold so many emotions and intentions, both from the person gifting it and the person receiving it. I can't think of a more meaningful thing to offer someone who is on the threshold of change. Whether they are grieving or celebrating, this gives them a safe place for their emotions to land. 

Zinnia's offerings are extensions of the heart, and vessels of love.
