Hush Now is part of the Moulting series.
Painted on reclaimed studio drop cloth, the work incorporates imagery and poetry from my childhood. Philip Booth's poem 'First Lesson' is written in India ink beneath the painted layers. While painting it, I carried the canvas into the forest, holding it above my head to catch rain and traces of the forest. Back in my studio, I swayed to Brahms's 'Lullaby' like a mother with a child on her hip allowing my paintbrush to follow its rhythm. The initially calm, circular movement became disrupted by rougher marks. Childhood imagery and language became partially obscured beneath accumulating layers, much like the inherited expectations absorbed by children accumulate, particularly girls.
