Venus of Willendorf by the Sea after Friedrich

Venus of Willendorf by the Sea after Friedrich

Acrylic, gouache, and watercolour pencil on canvas
48 × 60 in | 2026

Venus of Willendorf by the Sea after Friedrich is part of the Feminine Antiquity series.

In this reimagining of Caspar David Friedrich’s Monk by the Sea, the Venus of Willendorf takes the monk’s place before the vastness of sea and sky. No longer encountered solely as an ancient symbol of fertility, she stands as a woman and a human being. In a history that has not always recognized women as philosophical and spiritual subjects in their own right, she contemplates the sublime, confronting her own smallness and her place within the larger mysteries of existence.
