Venus of Hohle Fels after Goya is part of the Feminine Antiquity series.
Drawing upon Goya’s The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters, this painting introduces the prehistoric Venus of Hohle Fels into its darkness. Historically, women’s association with emotion, intuition and even hysteria has been used to diminish their intellectual authority and exclude their voices from shaping society. Where Goya conjures darkness and monsters, this reimagining introduces light, colour and swans, asking what becomes possible when ways of knowing beyond reason are not feared or dismissed, but allowed to contribute to a fuller understanding of what it is to be human.
