Waking Up after Fuseli

Waking Up after Fuseli

Acrylic, gouache, and watercolour pencil on canvas
48 × 60 in | 2025

Waking Up after Fuseli is part of the Feminine Antiquity series

Drawing upon Henry Fuseli’s The Nightmare, this painting replaces the unconscious woman weighed down by an incubus with a luminous, waking figure. Resting heavily upon her chest is a Sheela na gig, invoking the complicated inheritance of female sexuality and fertility, and the expectations historically placed upon women because of them. Swans, botanical forms and light emerge from Fuseli’s darkness.
